Monday, October 21, 2024 at 7:00pm EST
Presented by: Lisa Bartels

A 2023 Gallup Poll found teenagers spend an average of 4.8 hours per day on social media. Let's harness that passion for world language instruction! In this interactive session, 2023 FLANC Teacher of the Year, Lisa Bartels, will share techniques to use target language social media for instruction. She will share classroom tested, highly engaging and easy to replicate activities in all four language domains. Participants will learn how to find appropriate social media resources (without living online) and how social media can entice novice and intermediate learners to take their learning beyond the classroom. Use social media to go viral in your school and become a #WorldLanguageInfluencer!

In this session participants will:
• Look at data regarding teens’ current social media use and most popular platforms
• Participate in sample social-media-inspired classroom activities for reading, writing, listening, and speaking
• Discuss techniques to seamlessly incorporate social media in class and pitfalls to avoid
• Learn to quickly search for appropriate target language social media, and access libraries of vetted resources in French, Spanish, and English.

Like many of her students, Lisa’s first language learning experience was in 10th grade. Inspired by an amazing teacher, Lisa majored in French in college with a Spanish minor which opened opportunities to travel all over the world, to teach in international schools in Africa and in the Philippines, and to build bridges with international families and students here in the US. Lisa has over 20 years of teaching experience, holds an M.Ed., and is a National Board Certified Teacher. She is past president of the NC-AATF and was named 2023 AATF Outstanding Chapter Officer and the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina 2023 Teacher of the Year. Lisa is immensely grateful to her four children who serve as her guinea pigs and personal assistants, and to her husband Mike who, for over 25 years, has cheerfully encouraged her intense obsession with language instruction!
